The art of saying thank you in business

Clients are the lifeblood of your business, but besides that initial ‘thank you for your order’ email, are you letting them know how important they are? Are you taking the time to say thank you in your business? With so much competition around, can you afford to lose them to a competitor that does take the time to express gratitude to their clients?

Thanking your clients is part of a good client engagement plan that builds true business loyalty. A study by NewVoiceMedia discovered that the main reason customers switch companies is that they feel unappreciated.

Different ways to say thank you

Showing your appreciation to your clients can be done in so many ways. Traditionally, companies would roll out corporate entertainment budgets and take their clients to awards, sporting events, or meals. While that’s still how some companies do things, it’s not really appropriate for smaller businesses who don’t have the budget to throw at lavish events.

How you can say thank you to your clients

The two things that you need for great customer engagement is sincerity and information – and it’s no different here. Make sure that you collect as much information as you can about your clients. This includes birthdays, anniversaries or upcoming weddings and births. If they suffer an illness, accident or bereavement then you should also reach out. Just make sure it’s sincere and doesn’t come across as opportunistic.

So, if you’re looking for ways you can say thank you to your clients, here are a few ideas.

– A handwritten note

The simple act of writing a note to your client can make them feel valued and special. It can be something that you do for new clients or at key times of the year for existing clients (Christmas or the anniversary of becoming a customer). We’re so used to emails now, taking the time to write a handwritten note can really make you stand out.

– Send them a thoughtful book

Everyone loves a good book. Have a look through your client’s social media and LinkedIn profiles for inspiration. Or, send them something relevant to their interest or industry.

– Make the gift small and thoughtful

Again, it’s not the amount of money you spend, it’s the thought. You’re wanting to say thank you, so that isn’t dependent on the size or price of the gift. Even an unexpected delivery of some brownies or cupcakes will cheer a client up!

– Support them online

Social media is vital to business promotion. Using your influence to reach out and show support for your client is a great way to show them you appreciate them and potentially generate interest in their business.

– Invite them to an industry event

This is a great way to bond professionally. There are many events held throughout the year all over the country so there is bound to be one in your area.

– Go the extra mile for your best clients

While your budget is a major consideration, make sure that you pay extra attention to your most important clients. This can be a personalised gift at Christmas or the anniversary of them becoming a customer. It could also be to congratulate them on an achievement (personal or professional). A bunch of flowers on a birthday or a hamper delivered at Christmas are both great touches to inject that little something special into the customer relationship.

Knowing how to say thank you in business is definitely an art form. In order to do this successfully, you need to be consistent and sincere. Unless you have frequent contact with your clients you’re also going to need to do your research too. But the benefits are enormous. Not only will it help strengthen your relationship with your clients, but it will also help increase their loyalty to your business – and may help them recommend you to their friends too!
